The Spectrum Box

The website, started in late 2017, is the result of extensive research, frequent consultation of many websites, forums, and resources, and a great deal of dedication (a feeling shared by all of us who cherished the beloved Speccy, then and now).

It was created as a simple and immediate repository, avoiding complex graphics or blog-style content, and focusing on helping users quickly find and download the programs they’re looking for.

The design prioritizes clarity and ease of navigation, useful even when you remember a game visually rather than by title. A fast and intuitive search lets you narrow results by year, keywords, or other criteria.

The site is organized into clear, self-contained sections, each presented on a single page so that all essential information is visible at a glance.

Its main focus is on games released after the commercial era of the Spectrum, mainly homebrew titles and software later made freely available. Other sections also have their purpose, showcasing for example classic commercial titles and notable releases from different periods.

I don't think it is fair that they offer direct download of the games, instead of providing the itch.io link. That prevents the downloader tipping the author.

  2. Every package includes the link to the original homepage of the author(s). I took care of getting in touch with the authors (sometimes encouraging them to put programs back online that had been taken down), and in many cases I got their approval. Over time, I will make sure to contact everyone I can.

The site also hosts some hard-to-find programs (including some MIAs, unavailable elsewhere), made available thanks to long-term work and the contribution of some of the original authors :).

  3. Sorry about the two missing links — that was a big oversight on my part (I’ve been in a big rush lately). I’m fixing it right away!

    1. Don´t worry, I will have to explore all the games you have there. Probably after the GOTY.

    2. Also missing Teknamic - the only Portuguese retro publisher.

    3. Hi Filipe!
It's not completely missing: type "teknamic" or your name in the Search box. As you type, the page will update to show only the matching rows.

It would be good if you included a link to each game's itch.io page, if it exists. It's important for the author to see the statistics, perhaps some donations, etc.

  6. I'll think about it. It will/would not be a quick modification, I'll have to add a little icon (with the link) for each one of the 2900+ titles...
